The journey of Ceylon tea: from Sri Lanka to the heart of British tea culture
The story of Ceylon tea is one of adventure, resilience, and a remarkable transformation. It’s a tale that begins in the lush hills of Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) and ends in the teacups of millions of British tea lovers. But how did this extraordinary tea become so deeply embedded in British culture, and why is it still held in such high regard today? Let’s take a journey through history to discover the fascinating origins of Ceylon tea and its rise to prominence in Britain.
The birth of Ceylon tea
The history of Ceylon tea dates back to the mid-19th century, a time when the island of Sri Lanka was predominantly known for its coffee plantations. However, in the 1860s, a devastating coffee blight wiped out much of the island’s coffee crop, leaving planters in search of a new, sustainable crop to cultivate. It was at this pivotal moment that tea entered the scene.
Enter James Taylor, a Scottish planter who is often credited as the father of Ceylon tea. In 1867, Taylor established the first tea plantation in Sri Lanka, experimenting with tea plants brought from China and India. His efforts were met with remarkable success, and within a few short years, Ceylon tea began to flourish across the island.
Taylor’s pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most renowned tea industries. By the late 19th century, Ceylon tea had made its way to Britain, where it quickly gained popularity for its distinct flavour and rich aroma.
The rise of Ceylon tea in Britain
Ceylon tea’s journey to Britain was nothing short of extraordinary. As the British Empire expanded, so too did its taste for tea. British consumers were captivated by the bold, full-bodied flavour of Ceylon tea, which stood out among other teas available at the time. The unique terroir of Sri Lanka’s highlands, with their cool temperatures and abundant rainfall, contributed to the tea’s exceptional quality.
By the early 20th century, Ceylon tea had become a staple in British households, often enjoyed during afternoon tea or as a comforting brew on a chilly day. Its reputation for quality and consistency made it a favourite among tea connoisseurs and everyday drinkers alike.
The enduring appeal of Ceylon tea
Today, Ceylon tea continues to be celebrated for its distinctive taste and high quality. It is known for its bright, golden colour and brisk, slightly citrusy flavour, which sets it apart from other black teas. The tradition of hand-plucking and careful processing ensures that each cup of Ceylon tea delivers a rich and satisfying experience.
But what truly makes Ceylon tea special is its connection to the land and the people who cultivate it. The tea is often grown on small family-owned farms, where the craft of tea-making has been passed down through generations. The dedication and expertise of these farmers are what make Ceylon tea a product of both nature and nurture.

Very high quality blend of tea. The elderberries were large and well preserved with great flavour, and the floral notes of the lavender and chamomile complimented the flavour profile. I used it both on its own as a decaffeinated evening tea and also added it to black tea to give a boost of freshness. Excellent and friendly customer service. Quick delivery and very well packaged. 10/10
